Dr. Charles Modlin – Legacy
“Every man needs a neurologist trained to address the healthcare issues in men.” ~Dr. Charles Modlin.
For more than 25 years, Dr. Charles Modlin has worked tirelessly to help eradicate the health disparities that disproportionately maim the Black community – especially Black males.
The board-certified urologist and kidney transplant surgeon established the Cleveland Clinic Minority Men’s Health Center and Health Fair which is a friendly portal of entry into the Cleveland Clinic Health Center. Dr. Modlin knew it was imperative to check health status early to diagnose previously unrecognized diseases such as kidney disease, prostate cancer, hepatitis and hypertension. He also assisted with additional health equity programs and mentorship, outreach, patient navigation and research programs to improve the health of the overall community.
The 35 initial attendees grew to four simultaneous locations, 650 volunteers and 100 Cleveland Clinic departments. Outside organizations included the National Kidney Foundation, Stroke Association, Urban League, The Gathering Place and LifeBanc. Improving men’s health literacy is the bedrock of the event.
Said Dr. Modlin, “I have been provided opportunities that others didn’t have. I am in the position, due to sacrifices of people who went before me, to use the education that I have been fortunate to receive to give back.”
